Dakshina Kannada district still reigns as one of the most beautiful and unspoiled of all on the West coast of India. Sheltered by the soaring western ghats on the east and the mighty Arabian sea roaring along its shores, it is a tropical paradise of azure skies, sun drenched beaches, rampant greenery and gushing rivers. This is not all, it also boasts of colorful rituals and enthralling dance forms, where every stone has a story to tell.
This evocative land can be reached by land, rail, air and water. But a journey on the Bangalore - Hassan - Mangalore railway line is an unforgettable experience. It provides a breathtaking view of secluded hills and deep valleys across the wooded western ghats. The district offers umpteen places of interest for both pilgrims and pleasure seekers such as Dharmasthala, Subramanya, Kollur, Udupi, Karkala, Venoor and Moodabidri.

The temple and eight monastries were established by Madhwacharya.

Situated amidst lush greenery is the Subramanya temple where the Nagas sought the protection of Sri Subramanya and lived in caves. This peaceful resort attracts tourists during Subramanya Shashti.

Venoor, situated 30 kms from Dharmasthala is famous for the Gomateshwara statue installed in 1605 by an Anjila prince. Moodabidri, which is close to Venoor is described as "Jaina Kashi" and is known for its 18 basadis, the most famous of them being "Savira Kambada Basadi" (thousand pillar basadi).
